1. Medical Care

The Heart of the Matter:
Heart disease among infants is an unrelenting adversary, silently affecting the most vulnerable members of our society. The pain and helplessness faced by families with newborns diagnosed with congenital heart diseases are immeasurable. These families, grappling with the anguish of watching their infants fight for every breath, need our unwavering support.

The Impact to Date:
Action for Disadvantaged People (ACDIPE), has been working relentlessly to address this crisis. To date, we have successfully referred and provided life-saving interventions for over 400 newborns suffering from severe heart diseases. These babies, once clinging to the brink of life, are now thriving, smiling, and building futures that seemed distant just a short while ago.
Our achievements are heartwarming, but we are only at the beginning of our journey. There are countless more newborns in desperate need of help, and we refuse to turn a blind eye to their cries for survival.

Strategic Goals:
Our mission is ambitious, but we are driven by a commitment to save lives. Here are our strategic goals for the near future:

  1. Early Detection and Intervention:
We aim to strengthen our efforts in early detection and referral of newborns with heart diseases, ensuring that medical interventions are provided at the earliest possible stage.

  2. Access to Quality Care:
We strive to enhance access to specialized pediatric cardiac care, regardless of the families’ financial means or geographical location. We aim to partner with hospitals and institutions dedicated to treating pediatric heart diseases.

  3. Awareness and Education:
We plan to expand our awareness campaigns, educating communities, families, and healthcare providers about the importance of early detection and intervention in saving infants with heart diseases.

  4. Research and Innovation: Collaboration with medical researchers and institutions is integral to our mission. We aim to support research that can lead to breakthroughs in the treatment of pediatric heart conditions.

Comprehensive Support: Our ultimate goal is to provide holistic support for families, including emotional and financial assistance. We want to stand by their side throughout the challenging journey of caring for their infants.

2. HIV/ AIDS

ACDIPE recognizes the importance of addressing the challenges of HIV and AIDS in its work with vulnerable communities in Uganda. We support a holistic, inclusive and compassionate approach to HIV and AIDS which is founded on accurate and current information and which recognises the need for practical and realistic solutions.

We recognise the value of different approaches to HIV and AIDS in different communities, with different age groups, lifestyles and livelihoods. We favor approaches which have been developed in response to the local context and which tackle discrimination, stigma and isolation of PLWHAs.

ACDIPE finds the ABC framework to working with HIV and AIDS (Abstinence, Be Faithful, Condom use) somewhat limiting and does not support the highly judgemental ways in which it is sometimes used, where A and B are portrayed as more morally sound and responsible than C.  There can be a tendency for the ABC framework to limit the discussion to sexual activity and prevention of transmission, ignoring other important aspects of the HIV and AIDS debate.

ACDIPE feels that the SAVE framework is more in line with our values and mission.

Safe practices mean that individuals, families, communities and organisations are encouraged to adopt practices which reduce the chances of infection and appropriate in their particular situation.
These will be different for different people.
For example
For a pregnant woman who is HIV positive it will mean making sure she reduces the risk of mother-to-child transmission

  • For a drug-user it might mean not sharing needles, as a first step
  • For a hospital surgeon operating on a wide range of patients it might mean putting those with contagious diseases at the end of the operation list and taking extra precautions to avoid cross contamination or infection of the medical staff
  • For children at school it might mean promoting abstinence and delaying the onset of sexual activity, and where appropriate, condom use

Accessing appropriate interventions requires that organisations are fully informed with up-to-date information on the ways in which those affected with HIV and AIDS can increase their quality of life and actively encourage people to make use of these services.
This will include access to Anti-retroviral drugs (ARVs), clinics to support drug users to address their addiction, access to improved nutrition and rapid referral to health services for HIV positive people who are also infected with TB.
It will also mean actively encouraging families not to reject family members who are HIV positive but to provide ongoing care and support.

Verification encourages all at risk, however small, to access the testing facilities available.
It also encourages organisations not to attach stigma to the process of testing, but to see it as a responsible action.
Education recognises the importance of accurate information on a whole range of issues relating to HIV and AIDS and also opportunities to discuss and engage with these as part of the process of individuals, families and communities making informed decisions.

ACDIPE will only support HIV and AIDS projects which are seen as practical and realistic and which demonstrate a holistic, inclusive and compassionate approach based on current and accurate information.
Preference will be given to those projects in line with the SAVE framework as the final indicator.

3. Water and Sanitation

ACDIPE implemented the Integrated Community Managed water, hygiene and Sanitation pilot projects. The project are aimed at improving the general health conditions of the communities through increased access to safe and clean water, effective hygienic and sanitary facilities, and community capacity building to maintain the facilities.

In order to improve access to safe water in the communities, ACDIPE has constructed and protected water sources, promoted rain water harvesting at household and school levels as well as constructed water harvesting jars for the elderly, disabled and HIV/AIDS infected persons in communities and constructed Kiosks. ACDIPE has also promoted good hygiene and sanitation practices among the targeted households and schools.
